    Is Jesus The Only Way?

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6)

Yes, of a truth, Jesus is the only way to heaven. Jesus’ pronouncement above is not in any way suggestive, but a definite one about Himself. It is true that such an exclusive statement may offend others, especially those who are religiously inclined to the inclusivism point of view.

Inclusivism is the belief that one can appropriate God’s provision of salvation only on the basis of Jesus Christ’s atoning work, however, he or she does not need to explicitly believe in the gospel or probably convert to Christianity in order to be saved. This religious belief in other words teaches that salvation could be made available through means other than explicit faith in Christ and that adherents of other religions and even atheists can be saved by responding to God’s revelation in creation or through the elements of truth contained within their non-Christian religion. Could that be the truth? I don’t think so.

How then is Christianity different from every other religion in the world? The answer focuses on Jesus Christ, “the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

In fact, the Bible teaches that there is no other way to salvation than through Jesus Christ. From John 14:6 quoted above, we see Jesus Himself saying, He is not a way, as in one of many who have come or yet to come; but He is the way, that is the one and only sure way and that no one, can come to God the Father except through Him.

    Romans 10:13-15 reads,

13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”[g]

Apostle Paul from the above is seeking to establish the fact that, the Gospel must be preached to all, why? Because, by it, the hearers can be introduced to Jesus, the one who saves. For “if you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved” (Rom. 10:9-10).

Jesus spoke of Himself as the only way to heaven in several places besides John 14:6. These include John 3:14-15, John 6:35, John 10:7-10 and John 11:25.
The Apostles in their preaching as recorded in the scriptures focused on the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus as the means to salvation. For example, Peter, speaking to the Sanhedrin, clearly proclaimed Jesus as the only way to heaven: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Paul also speaking in Antioch, singled out Jesus as the Savior: “I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin” (Acts 13:38–39). John in 1 John 2:12 also specifies that it is only through the name of Christ Jesus our forgiveness is assured: “I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.”

Indeed, Jesus alone can offer eternal life because He is the only one who lived a sinless life and provided the perfect sacrifice for our sins by His death on the cross. He lived on earth as a man but was also God (John 1:1-4). Because He was divine, He rose again three days after His death, being the only one ever to die and come back to life on His own, then ascended into heaven. While the founders of various non-Christian religions of the world have died and been buried, Christ is very much alive!

It is of truth once again, that it is only through Jesus one can be saved for eternal life in heaven is made possible only through Christ. Jesus prayed, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3).

1John 5:9-12 nails it for us:

9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
